ASPERGERS SYNDROME (ADHD)

The American Psychiatric Association recommends that all of the following conditions be met before a diagnosis of ADHD can be confirmed

• Many symptoms of the disorder are present
• The symptoms are severe enough to impair academic and/or social functioning
• The symptoms are inconsistent with the child's developmental level
• The symptoms have persisted for 6 months or more
• The symptoms were present before 7 years of age
• The symptoms are observed both at school or at home
• There is no evidence of a health condition of mental illness that could cause similar problem

ADHD Checklist

• Inattention- often fails to give close attention to details, makes careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities
• Frequently has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play
• Often does not seem to listen when spoken to
• Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork and chores
• Has great difficulty getting organised
• Usually dislikes and avoids tasks that require sustained mental effort [such as schoolwork or housework]
• Frequently loses things [such as toys, assignments, books and pencils]
• Is easily distracted by irrelevant sights and sounds
• Is often forgetful in daily activities
• HYPERACTIVITY AND IMPULSIVITY
• Often fidgets with hands and feet and squirms in seat
• Often leaves seat in classroom or other situations where remaining seated is expected [such as at dinner table]
• Runs about or climbs excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate
• Has great difficulty playing quietly
• Is often 'on the go' or acts as if 'driven by a motor'
• Talks excessively
• Frequently blurts out answers before questions have been completed
• Often has difficulty waiting turns
• Often interrupts or intrudes on others [butts into conversation or games]
