MOVING OUT (1991) | ||||||||||||||||||
|
I get very annoyed with loudmouths who criticise people who live with their parents for an extended period of time. I was 26 when I finally moved out of home and into a place with my then girlfriend and now my wife, Lee. The move was a major event for me. It representing a change, which at the time I had no real idea how to cope with. I wasn't ready on the day as a result, and a lot of stuff got left behind. It was a reflection on the stability I had for over 20 years in the one room. I'm not sure of the exact date, but it was November 1991. I think the only thing I had ready for the move were the suitcases of clothes and the multitudes of cassettes and the limited number of books I had. I hadn't disconnected my recording equipment or prepared my bed for the move. That caused something of a flurry on my part and I had problems handling it. Moving isn't pleasant at the best of times, but boy did I have to go to school on the things I did wrong on this one! I had no experience with moving house. I arrived at my long term childhood home a year after I was born, and most I had to do was pack for holidays - which was simple compared to moving house! Luckily I had a wonderful family to help finish off the move and it helped that the distance was relatively short (from Donvale to Box Hill). Little did I know that this would be the first of (as of 2008) eight moves - add four for my individual sojourn to Canberra. |
