This article was created by Tex The Astros had a horror 2007. We finished 12 games behind the Cubs who won the NL Central, and we were damn horrible on the road. The Cubs were joined by the Phillies - who stole the NL East from the Mets - and the Diamondbacks as champions and the Rockies took the NL wild card. In the AL the Tigers failed to get over the Indians who won the AL Central, and the Angels took out the AL West. The Red Sox and the Yankees again made the playoffs with the Yankees getting the wild card. In the NL it was the Phillies and the Rockies, and the Cubs and the Diamondbacks. Both were broom jobs with Arizona and Colorado sweeping their opponents 3-zip. The NL pennant series starts today. In the AL it was the Sox and the Angels, and the Indians and the Yankees. Boston made it three broom jobs, but the Yankees did take one game off Cleveland before the Indians finished it 3-1. The AL pennant series starts tomorrow. ---- With three games down in the NLCS, the Rockies are one game away from their first ever World Series and threatening to sweep the Diamondbacks out on their way to the NL pennant. The Rockies belted the D-backs 5-1 in Game 1 at Chase Field and then they shocked the home team again in Game 2 stealing an 11th inning win 3-2. Headed for Corrs Field the D-backs had to pull one out, but the Rockies nailed a three run homer at the bottom of the sixth and are now 3-0 with another game in Denver to come. In the ALCS it's closer with the series tied 1-1. The Red Sox opened the series at Fenway Park with a strong 10-3 victory thanks to the pitching staff not going well for the Indians. Twice they handed runs to the Sox when the bases were loaded on balls. But Game 2 was the game of the series (both NL and AL) so far with the scores tied 6-6 into extra innings before the Indians got 4 RBI's and then a 3 run homer to silence the faithful at Fenway 13-6. The series heads for Jacobs Field with the whole thing delicately balanced and both rosters needing to work on their bull pens. ---- The NLCS is over. The Rockies have taken the pennant and they are now in their first World Series ever. They've won 21 of their last 22 games and take one hell of a roll into the World Series. It was the bottom of the fourth that won it for Colorado when they got all 6 runs off 3 RBI's and a 3 run homer. They ended up winning 6-4 with the Diamondbacks raising hopes with a 3 run homer at the top of the eighth, only to fail at the top of the ninth. The Indians went 2-1 up in the ALCS with a tough 4-2 win at home. They went out to a 4-0 lead after five, and the Red Sox got two back off a homer over the pitcher's head but they got no closer. The Indians can shut this out by winning the remaining two games at Jacobs Field, but if the Red Sox get one back it's back to Fenway for one game at least. ---- The Indians are now one game away from the World Series after another seven run inning at the bottom of the fifth knocked the turkey stuffing out of the Red Sox. Boston got three back in the top of the sixth but they got no closer, and they need to win Game 5 to stay alive and take the series back to Fenway. ---- What a difference a weekend makes! The Red Sox turned it around winning three games to take the AL pennant right from under the Indians nose and it'll be the Sox and the Rockies in the World Series. In the end it was the Indians bull pen that cost them. After Sabathia was taken out after six innings in Game Five, the Indians let five runs in while being pegged down by Beckett who was great on the mound for the Sox and they won 7-1. Back at Fenway the Sox then whipped the Indians ass in the first three innings of Game Six, causing two pitching changes while the Red Sox pasted ten on the Green Monster including a grand slam in the bottom of the first! 10-1 going into the fourth inning and the game was over! The Indians tried to fight back in Game Seven, but the bull pen failed again in the bottom of the seventh and the bottom of the eighth. Down 2-3, the Indians failed to stop the Red Sox adding eight without reply and all the Indians could do was collapse out of the race to the World Series. That starts on Thursday morning Australian Time. I reckon it could be a great series. The Red Sox are on a roll, and have the WS experience. This is the Rockies first time ever in the WS, and the lay off after the NCLS sweep might hurt them even though they carried a 21 from 22 run in so they're on a roll as well. If the Rockies bull pen is working the Red Sox will have a fight on their hands. ---- After all the build up - the World Series was a disaster for the Rockies. The lay off hurt them, and the Sox continued their roll and swept the Rockies to take their second world championship since the Curse of the Bambino was exorcised in 04. The WS started at Fenway Park, and the Sox were magnificent in a 13-1 pasting. Beckett put in another blinder on the mound, and Rockies bull pen failed to do what was needed. Game 2 was better for the Rockies but in a defensive struggle the Sox still got up 2-1. It was a better lead in to the trip to Corrs Field and lord knows they needed it. But in Game 3 at the top of third it happened again. The Sox batted in six and the Rockies were playing catch up as the bull pen failed again. They got five back to make a game of it but the Sox got away again to win 10-5. Game 4 was a desperate time for the Rockies. And this game was hard fought. Things got off to a bad start for the Rockies when Ortiz sunk the ball out to right allowing Ellsbury to get home at the top of the first. Cook on the mound for the Rockies took that on the chin and shut the Sox out until the top of the fifth when Varitek put the ball to the wall to bring Lowell home for a 2-0 lead. And then when Cook was taken out, Lowell got himself home with a left field whallop into the bleachers - and the Sox could smell the championship. But the Rockies weren't done yet. At the bottom of the seventh Hawpe sunk a homer over the right field wall to make it 3-1. In the top of the eighth the Sox answered with Kielty sinking one over left for a 4-1 lead, but the Rockies crowd saw light when Atkins brought Helton home with another out of the park over left and it was 4-3 going into the ninth. Corpas closed it out for the Rockies, but Papelbon made sure of it for the Sox. I was hoping for a seven game classic series like we did in 01 and 02. But no soap. The Rockies will be back. They've got a good roster and shouldn't lose anyone. They'll be better for the experience. |
