Trans Adelaide is the name given to the public transport system in Adelaide. The rail system is far and away the worst in the country due to it's poor frequency, unsupported ticketing system and the fact that it is the only metro rail system that is not electrified, although there are plans finally to rectify this for all lines except Belair. Rail System If there was a classic example of the poor state of the rail system, this line is it. Especially since the Overland (which travels into Adelaide from this direction) switched to standard gauge making the majority of the line a single track. At the same time a number of stations were closed. This line travels through Goodwood, Hawthorn, Mitcham and Blackwood before terminating at Belair. Noarlunga line This line is probably the quickest in Adelaide which is saying something given how poor it really is. I say that because it has off peak weekday express services that cover quite a distance. This line travels through Goodwood, Edwardstown, Marion, Brighton, Marino and Christies Beach before terminating at Noarlunga. There is a weekday only spur to Tonsley - which should get some more action than it does! There was some federal money designed to support the extension of this line but there is no mention of it on the website at this point. Outer Harbour line This line travels through Croydon, Woodville, Cheltenham, Port Adelaide, Exeter and Taperoo before terminating at Outer Harbour where passenger shipping apparently used to tie up. There have been rumours that the terminal will be cut back to the previous station at North Haven, but if the ship passenger terminal is indeed closed I think this would be a sensible decision. Grange line This line acts as a short spur off the Outer Harbour line, and is an example of what should be happening with the Tonsley spur. Leaving the Outer Harbour line at Woodville it travels through Seaton before terminating at Grange. Gawler line This line is probably the busiest in Adelaide just ahead of the Noarlunga Line. It also features the city's newest station - Mawson Interchange. This line travels through Dry Creek, Greenfields, Salisbury, Elizabeth and Smithfield before reaching the three stations in Gawler - terminating at Gawler Central. A section of the day with only a short express is the reason why this line is slower than Noarlunga. Glenelg Tram The Glenelg tram is a bit of a saving face for the Adelaide transport system - especially with the recent injection of some more modern trams and the extension of the line from Victoria Square to North Terrace. The service originates on the western section of North Terrace and proceeds past the central railway station and through the centre of Adelaide. It then travels through Goodwood and Plympton, passing Morphettville Racecourse to it's terminus in Glenelg. The North Terrace terminus may be extended to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre in the future. External Links * Trans Adelaide - The official Trans Adelaide website |
