Trans WA runs all the rail and government bus services in Western Australia. The buses only go as far north as the Geraldton region - if you want to travel further north you need to talk to Greyhound. I talk through experience.

Rail Services
The Australind

This service runs from Perth to Bunbury to the south. Running twice daily, the train runs through Armadale, Mundijong, Pinjarra, Waroona and Harvey before terminating in Bunbury.

I travelled on this train for a short distance from Armadale to Mundijong in 2006 and I wasn't impressed. Western Australia's services run on a narrow gauge, and to put four seats across instead of three as they do in Queensland cramps the carriage's up.

The Prospector

This service runs from Perth at the East Perth terminal to Kalgoorlie. Running daily with an extra service on Monday and Friday, the Prospector has apparently been upgraded fairly recently but I am yet to see it. This service runs on the standard gauge through Northam, Kellerberrin, Merredin, Southern Cross and Koolyanobbing before terminating in Kalgoorlie.

The Avon Link

Originally started as solely a commuter service between Perth and Northam, Avon Link now services the standard gauge line through to Merredin three times a week as well as one short range service between Northam and Midland connecting to the Trans Perth services from there. Like the Prospector, the Avon Link has also been upgraded recently.

Bus services

The rest of the state covered by government public transport is handled by buses. Frankly I think that stinks because there would easily be a demand for rail services to Albany and Geraldton. Other places serviced by buses include Busselton, the Lower South West, Lake Grace, Esperance and the northern Wheatbelt region.
