New to Phil’s World with the Wiki, this section is all about my favourite movie series. In 1977 when A New Hope was first released as simply Star Wars, it created a phenomenon that has been hard to top. It also started a new era in special effects indicated by no less than 7 Academy Awards, and brought to the forefront names like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. Merchandise went nuts in many different directions, my favourite of which is Meco’s disco version of the Star Wars title theme. Surprisingly, the classical soundtrack (not including Henry Mancini’s music for the bar on Tatooine) is a rare classical collection I’ll listen to.

The Empire Strikes Back followed in 1980, and then Return of the Jedi in 1983. By then Star Wars fans knew that these three movies did have prequels, and hoped that one day these prequels would be produced.

In 1997 the three movies were re-released after being digitally re-mastered to rescue the original prints. This was to set fans up for the promised prequels and in 1999 The Phantom Menace introduced us to a young Obi Wan Kenobi and to Anakin Skywalker. By this time I was thoroughly familiar with the older movies and my main mission was to see how things were tied up. I could see from my seat in the cinema at Doncaster Shoppingtown that Anakin and Padme were to be the parents of Luke and Leia, and that prediction was confirmed in Attack of the Clones in 2002. There were still a lot of loose ends left for me when I left the Sunshine Megaplex (gold class no less!) and I assumed that these would be tied up in 2005 with Revenge of the Sith. They were, although I was interested in A New Hope that Obi Wan observed that he didn’t own a droid. He did – R4. He also seemed not to remember R2D2 although that may have been an act, as he did know what R2 could do. But they were little things. And in a final update to Return of the Jedi, the concluding shot of Obi Wan, Yoda and Anakin together was changed. In the original 1983 version, an older actor played Anakin. But in the current version, this actor is replaced by Hayden Christensen as he was in Revenge of the Sith.
