I first published this list on my PHP forum in 2005. It took a lot of hard work and eliminations, including a lot of material that just missed - in particular from AC/DC and Midnight Oil. And since that publication the list has experienced two changes. I dropped Rasputin by Boney M from the list to make room for Step Up by Drowning Pool - the most recent song of the list and one of only four entries from the 21st century. Then I realised that I left a bona fide classic out - Hotel California by The Eagles. That led to the dropping of I'm outta here by Shania Twain. Most are from the 70's and 80's and below the list I have the reasons behind the top 20. 1. Beds are burning - MIDNIGHT OIL BEDS ARE BURNING I love songs that send a message as well pleasant to my ears. Of all the message songs I love, this is the strongest and the best. DOCTORIN THE TARDIS Yeah this had to be here didn't it! Biased and then some - and my entrance music as a face in pro wrestling (not from the very start mind you). If one says you love Doctor Who, you can't hate this piece of brilliance! JAILBREAK I have a big soft spot for this one, because I did a mime/lip sync performance to it at a talent show at primary school back in 1976 (when this was a hit) - and it got me some of the respect that I hadn't got out of my peers throughout that year. IMAGINE I connect to this probably better than any other song here. Enough said. I LOVE ROCK'N'ROLL The title says it all, and I do. Most of my top 100 is rock with a few exceptions - and this probably reflects the fact that I'm a child of the 70's, when rock was probably at it's height, and at it's best. Funny that - when you consider this was a hit in 1982! WALKING ON SUNSHINE If there's any song that I'll grab it's a song that grabs me and gets me on my feet, and this is the best example of it. WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN I know the girls themselves hate this, but I love it! This is similar to Walking on Sunshine in that it grabs you and gets you on your feet. DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH Another message song, and I don't think I need to add to that - except to laugh at the way it faded - "We got the power! And who gave it to you?" "Donny Osmond!" "WHAT?!!!!" ACTION The Sweet is one band that made a big impression on my top 100 - and no surprise given that it was The Sweet that introduced me to chart music in January 1975 (their version of Peppermint Twist was the first pop song I ever heard). This is my favourite of their material, and this would also be the show introduction music for my wrestling promotion if it ever got off the ground! SALT WATER Another message song - and I'm sure if dad John was around he would have been bloody proud of Julian with this. It should be a greenies anthem. I CAN'T WAIT I've always loved Stevie Nicks and her work, but I couldn't find a spot for anything else other than Stand Back - and I couldn't fit anything from Fleetwood Mac! NOVEMBER RAIN Until a couple of years ago, I wouldn't have even considered this as a candidate for my top 100. But that changed when I saw the lyrics at a Karaoke night at the Glenelg backpackers. I saw the message, and this leapt into my top 20 as a direct result. LIVING ON A PRAYER Like Stevie Nicks, Bon Jovi has done some great stuff but I couldn't fit anymore in! UP THERE CAZALY Yeah - I'm a footy tragic! What footy tragic doesn't love this? BLACK OR WHITE This is the best example of a message song from more recent times from MJ. BARRACUDA I love the guitar riff with this, and this is another one that would made good wrestler entrance music. I considered it for mine when I started as a heel manager, but I opted instead for something else. I WAS MADE FOR LOVING YOU BABY Kiss has done some great stuff also, but like Stevie Nicks and Bon Jovi I couldn't fit anymore in - with War Machine and Rock'n'roll all night in consideration. MY SHARONA Come on - who didn't love this when it was a hit? Admit it! It's a pity the Knack turned out to be another of the long list of one hit wonders, but there was a unique aspect of this that had all the experts calling it "new wave" - and with good reason. Even if they ended up being wrong! THE CRUNCH I hooked onto this like a shot, and is probably my favourite disco song from that era. It's also a song that I think would suit a wrestling entrance for a strong man face. AGE OF REASON I preferred this to You're the Voice for reasons I can't really explain, but there's probably a touch of bias given that my younger cousin Penny was a part of the video clip (on her birthday no less!) |
