BCA GRAND FINAL | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Just for a change, I thought I would use the personal updates section for a report on the Ballarat Cricket Association first grade grand final - played between Mount Clear and Napoleons/Sebastopol at the Eastern Oval. Naps/Sebas won the toss and sent Mount Clear into bat first. It was a decision that quickly looked like a bad one, when Mount Clear put together a magnificent opening partnership of 113. But once the first wicket finally fell, Naps/Sebas started to fight back. They picked up the remaining nine wickets for the addition of 149 runs, with Mount Clear dismissed for 262 at the end of the first day. Still a formidable total, but getable on the small ground that gave away more than 300 runs to both Carlton and Dandenong in the district one day game in early January. However it soon looked like a massacre was on the way as day two commenced, as the top order of Naps/Sebas crashed. Five wickets went cheaply for about 50 runs, and Naps/Sebas were struggling to get to the point where they could avoid being sent in again, let alone getting to the Mount Clear first innings total. But to their credit, Naps/Sebas knuckled down to the task at hand. They avoided the follow on before losing their sixth wicket and they were 7 for 128 at tea. Through dogged determination, and a quick fire blast for the tenth wicket got Naps/Sebas to a total of 213 before the final wicket fell. The difference of just 49 could have been a lot worse than it was. Out of jail proverbially, Naps/Sebas continued the fightback in the remaining 16 overs of the second day getting two wickets for 13 putting Mount Clear's back to the wall. They managed to shut the game down and finished the second day at 2 for 25, but the game was up for grabs as Mount Clear were only 74 runs ahead with eight wickets in hand - going into the week before day three the following weekend. Day three saw Mount Clear get into even worse trouble, losing another three wickets for the addition of another 25 runs. But then it was their turn to engage in some dogged determination. A magnificent partnership for the eighth wicket resurrected Mount Clear's advantage and they saw out the day finishing at 9 for 217 for a lead of 266. And they could still bat into the last day to leave Naps/Sebas short on time and overs for the run chase. The best chance Naps/Sebas had now was for them to get the last wicket quickly and get off to a fast start without losing any wickets. On the final day Mount Clear got two more overs in before being dismissed without adding to their overnight score, giving Naps/Sebas 75 overs to get 267. A run rate of 3.56 made it getable as long as wickets didn't fall. But fall they did and Mount Clear were looking home with wickets and time in their favour. Naps/Sebas however didn't throw in the towel. They fought back to get within 100 runs to get before they lost their sixth wicket and at the end of the 57th over they were 6 for 171 - still 96 runs away from victory and 18 overs to go. 5.33 runs an over required, but with only four wickets in hand. Mount Clear re-applied the brakes, and the seventh went down at 189. Then a foolish run out and Mount Clear could smell victory. Only two wickets to fall and Naps/Sebas hadn't even reached 200. But now the man who'd rescued the ship in the first innings was out there. He set out to get things going, and Naps/Sebas were back in it. With six overs to go, the score had leapt to 238. After leaving it alone, Mount Clear took the new ball (as was their right once the score reached 200) but the runs kept coming. With four overs remaining Naps/Sebas only needed 18 runs - but then the game swung back Mount Clear's way when the ninth wicket fell. It wasn't the man they wanted but now they only needed one wicket for victory. And the last batsman had a runner. The result was an over without runs and it was 18 runs from 3 overs. But Naps/Sebas wouldn't give it up and picked up 7 runs from the third last over to be 11 runs from victory. The second last over was quieter though - only 3 runs from it and from the last over Naps/Sebas needed 8 runs for victory. The first ball was nicked behind the keeper and two runs were taken in a good start to the over for Naps/Sebas. The second ball was a straight hit past the bowler but there was a fielder there and only one run was scored. That put the injured batsman on strike. He played a forward defence shot to cover and no run was scored off the third ball. On the fourth ball he got off strike with a nice shot to deep cover for a single and it was four to win from the last two balls. The danger man played a cut behind square off the second last ball but again picked out a fielder and another single meant that three runs were needed off the last ball, by the injured batsman. Two would not be enough - as Mount Clear had the advantage of being the minor premier. And the last ball was a swing and a miss safely through to the keeper! No outright result meant it was a first innings result - and that went to Mount Clear. What a fantastic game of cricket! |
